Effect of bromocriptine on plasma growth hormone and glucose tolerance in chronic renal failure.

چکیده
Chronic renal failure is associated with high circulating levels of growth hormone (GH) which are not affected by stimuili such as glucose loading.' They may be due to delayed degradation, excessive secretion, or both. Secretion of GH seems to be increased by catecholamines.' Bromocriptine (2-brom-alpha-ergocryptine; CB 154), an ergot alkaloid with dopaminergic activity, suppresses abnormal GH secretion in patients with acromegaly3 but not in normal subjects or in patients with diabetes mellitus.4 We therefore assessed the effects of bromocriptine on abnormal GH secretion in response to glucose loading in patients with chronic renal failure.

Effect of bromocriptine on maturity onset diabetes.
The effect of the dopamine agonist, bromocriptine, and the dopamine antagonist, metoclopramide, on glucose tolerance was examined in maturity onset diabetics and normal subjects. After bromocriptine there was a lowered fasting blood glucose and improved glucose tolerance in the diabetics. The controls showed an initial improvement in glucose tolerance. A reduction in insulin levels and a marked...
متن کاملComparison of Growth Parameters in Two Groups of Children with Chronic Renal Failure Treated with and without Growth Hormone Replacement Therapy
Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of growth hormone on growth parameters such as Z scores for height, weight, and body mass index (BMI), and height velocity in two groups of children with chronic renal failure (CRF) treated with and without growth hormone. Methods: This longitudinal study was conducted on all children aged 6 months to 16 years with a short ...
متن کاملThe effect of short-term metformin treatment on plasma prolactin levels in bromocriptine-treated patients with hyperprolactinaemia and impaired glucose tolerance: a pilot study
Metformin was found to affect plasma levels of some pituitary hormones. This study was aimed at investigating whether metformin treatment has an impact on plasma prolactin levels in bromocriptine-treated patients with hyperprolactinaemia and impaired glucose tolerance. The study included 27 patients with hyperprolactinaemia, who had been treated for at least 6 months with bromocriptine. Based o...
متن کاملThe effect of chronic psychological stress on carbohydrate metabolism in rat
Several studies have shown that stress has major effects on metabolism. There is also some evidence indicating that stress may induce diabetes mellitus. The present study has investigated the role of chronic psychological stress on carbohydrate metabolism in male Wistar rats (250 ± 50 g). Animals were divided into control and test groups (n = 8/group). Blood samples were obtained by tail snippi...
